Web Security / Phishing Information

Warning Will Robertson!

The link you attempted to visit was part of a Phishing scam. Your request has been intercepted and redirected by our security team. Our security team has grandmothers and grandfathers to, and we work hard to make sure that our system and our clients sites are not used to remove you or them from their retirement savings. We saved you this time, but we’re not everywhere you might be on the web, so read on for some tips to get you wise to the ways of the wild web.

How did this happen?

You probably got an email that claimed to be  from your financial institution, but it was not. You are often asked to  update your file, check your balance, or even asked to login to check that you haven’t become a victim of fraud. These tricky guys take over websites and then put exact copies of popular banks and credit union websites up in their place. They record all the info you enter. Of course the info won’t work right then and there, but now they are very close to stealing your identity.

How can I Tell?

  • Always be very suspicious of bank requests you get via email.
  • Look at the URL, at the top of your browser, are you really on your bank’s domain ( www.yourbank.com ) or is it more like ( www.galeart.com/security/FDIC/online/BankOfAmerica.com/online )
  • Is it a number like ( 132.392.93.9 )
  • Is there no https, no lock or green bar showing you’re using encryption.

Where can I get more info?

The Canadian Department of Public Safety has a much more extensive write up about this particular problem.
