Looks like there is alot of interest in getting Boxee Beta on the Apple TV. While we’re still waiting for an official release from Boxee I have updated our script with a few new features.
Latest:
Latest will use the latest component software instead of what’s considered most stable. Right now that is firefox 3.6 and the beta2 of adobe flash. These two upgrades will fix for the most part choppy web video. Though an occasional crash of Boxee has been seen with this combination. Running the script again without the option will downgrade your software back to the official adobe and firefox 2.0.20.
wget -m -nd http://www.green-light.ca/cmn_external/app/boxee/beta/BoxeeBetaInstallScript.sh
sudo sh BoxeeBetaInstallScript.sh latest
sudo reboot now
Nitotv -- Settings -- Install Software -- Smart installer.
- when you use latest it installs nitrotv if you dont’ have it, you NEED to run the smart installer for adobe beta to work, else it hangs when loading. Once you reboot go to Nitotv > Settings > Install Software > Smart installer.
Auto -Update:
The script now detects if there is a new version of itself and downloads and runs that.
[...] UPDATED: Script and Instructions [...]
Keith,
Thanks so much for continuing to evolve this script. I did a factory restore last night, patchsticked, reloaded nitoTV, and then ran your script (at about 4pm EST) and everything is working except for the choppy video. Hope when I run “latest”, this new version of flash will solve that.
Kick ass work.
Nick
Hi, I am trying to install this on my ATV however it goes no further than sudo sh BoxeeBetaInstallScript.sh latest
The command window just freezes and the connection times out?
Thanks,
Neil.
@neil
I strongly suspect that isn’t a problem with the script. Firefox 3.6 just came out yesterday and that’s the first thing it tries to update, so it’s first thing you should see some output on, it maybe that mozilla’s ftp was simply overloaded when you tried.
Please let me know if anyone else has trouble like this.
I just ran the latest script and it installed fine including NitroTV. Apps seem to be playing video better but I tried to play some Twilight Zone episodes and Star Trek OS and it is more choppy than before this latest update. Is there a problem in general with certain TV shows. Thanks, I’m completely new to all of this.
I assume that there was no need to patchstick again for the script above. I ran the script in Terminal and followed the NitroTv instructions. Ill let you know how the choppy video issue works out. Thanks for all your work to make this happen.
Thanks for working this out.
I’m still having issues, but I’m glad not have to go the whole way from the start, because of the research, you and Jim and others done and keep doing.
thanks JimWiley, Keith and Nick. Restored to factory defaults and it works. thanks.
didn’t work for me. seems to have stopped videos from playing. (like the boxee alpha issues)
Sheesh!!!
This mod has been like trying to capture a room of cats in a gunny sack!
From what I can gather this mod precludes the fact that the ATV is under powered in order to load Mozilla, NitoTV, or Boxee Beta without a decoder card on-board and some more tweaking to allow the services, processes, buffering, remote controll clicking, and caching with so little memory.,
We need more swap file performance I suspect given the ATV’s minimalist archetecture and performance to run Flash 10.x….yadayada !!
Ps…wtf with ffox hanging and whats up with all the broken and choppy feeds ?
I believe there is more then enough raw power in the machine to run most things under 1080p. The choppy video feeds for most us networks is b/c of silverlight and the move network plugin. The move network plugin is not included with this script as Jim has seen no way to install it properly as of yet. Not sure what causes the firefox crashes, you would have to grab the debug logs and post them on the forums.
.10408 Version of beta posted to public release. Can’t wait to re-run the script.
Just ran the update and I did not get the .10408 ver, but it downloaded the older .10261. I did run with the “latest” tag at the end of the command.
The latest boxee link needs to be updated by me manually. Not like there is a /lastest link on boxee’s website so i have to use my own redirect. Thanks for posting, i’ve confirmed this is publicly available and updated the link. If you run the script again you’ll get 10408, you don’t have to use the latest but you should if you used it before.
Thanks
K
Hey Keith,
I haven’t tried the Boxee Beta yet, but just seen a few “my remote isn’t working in ATV’s menus anymore” posts in Boxee’s forum.
Launcher’s install script removed Boxee’s IR-daemon (http://code.google.com/p/atv-xbmc-launcher/source/browse/tags/boxee-info/scripts/boxee-0.9.14_update.sh#92), as Launcher already forwards IR commands to Boxee. You might wanna try if this still works with the new Beta and if it does, remove boxeeservice, too.
cheers,
stephan
Very nice, up and running in less than 20mins! – Watched the apple keynote via boxee beta via the justin.tv app. mucho thanks
I see there’s a Launcher 3.2.2 to install. Does that now work with the Boxee Beta?
I’ve just got the Alpha running on my ATV, to run this do I need to factory restore and install from scratch or just ssh in and run the ‘latest’ on the ATV as is?
thanks for your help and the great work
Just run the latest and you should be fine.
I have had no issue with the launcher and boxee beta.
omg this new update is so much easier!thanks keep up the good work!
Brilliant!! Don’t forget to to type [ssh frontrow@appletv.local] to establish the connection first.
Wow…. Your script worked. I don’t know if it was the latest Boxee Beta or your script, but after every other set of instructions on the internet, it finally works on my ATV. I have been fooling with this for weeks.
Congratulations.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if I have an old version of boxee on my atv now, do I need to do a whole new patchstick or can I just update to the newest version from the ATV front menu?
Thanks Keith,
Your script worked perfectly. The jittery playback I had with the alpha is no more, all is working (so far) flawlessly. The beta is so much better (should be really!) Thanks for putting this together. My ATV is now the media centre it always should have been.
Thanks again, keep up the good work.
No if you can already ssh to your machine you don’t need anything else.
Did this today, works great!
I am no computer hack, so how do I apply these changes to my ATV currently with Alpha?
Wow, this makes it so easy, but why install silverlight? Boxee doesn’t do netflix on ATV and it doesn’t work in Firefox either. Am I missing something or is there another app that uses silverlight?
unfortuntely the script doesn’t work for me. this is what terminal tells me:
-bash-2.05b$ sudo sh BoxeeBetaInstallScript.sh latest

YOUR ACTION REQUIRED – Run the nitro smart installer after you reboot. Select NitrotV > Settings > Install Software > Smart Installer, the beta adobe will not work otherwise
I think it’s because there is no file in this directory http://www.finkconsulting.com/opensource/wget-1.9.1.dmg
Please help me to solve this.
This worked great! However any online content is really jittery. Is there anything I can try to improve the performance? Tried Hulu/Fox/NBC feeds and all are coming in with a lot of jitter (unwatchable).
Thanks!
I’m experiencing the same issue as Tom. Audio is smooth but video is jittery to the point of being unwatchable. Just ran the install this morning and everything went in so well.
Any advice?
When I use the wget command to download the file from your site it is telling me “permission denied” and won’t allow me to download the file. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!!
You are a genious! Thanks to you and Jim for putting together this script. I’m am now at peace knowing my Boxee version on ATV matches my PC. I found your site from a Boxee forum thread and now your bookmarked!
Thanks!
Thanks for the script guys, works great. Cheers!
Worked like a charm, very easy to follow directions thanks I have been waiting patiently for this.
i keep getting an error “wget: command not found” . I installed the wget in the bin and sbin.
Once you reboot go to Nitotv > Settings > Install Software > Smart installer.
How do I , go to Nitotv > Settings > Install Software > Smart installer via ssh commands
NBC still just gets stuck after all install.
Hi, I don’t know why when I copy paste the script I get asked for a password, I always thought it was “frontrow” can someone confirm. Thanks
cheers
It is frontrow usually, it’s whatever you used to login to the appletv to run the script in the first place. The Script runs sudo commands so it will ask for the password. This is the expected behaviour.
Ah. I thought I could upgrade to 3.x and then do this. Turns out you can’t.
Is there a patchstick for 3.x yet?
Should I just factory restore the thing and start over with this?
Hi Keith thanks for the script, I finally got working in about 20min.
But now I have other issues, JustinTv does not support Flash Player 10.1 Beta
and Couch Surfer is not supported on OS 3.0 can you shine some light please.
thanks in advance
I forgot to mention earlier that the atv-usbcreator I downloaded from code.google.com is now unable to do anything. It is getting 404 errors when it tries to download the appropriate files.
So now I have no patchstick either.
There are other apps the use it, cbs, nbc, apparently. I say apparently b/c I’m in canada and since our wonderful north american media companies have decided the best way to make a profit is silly little geo located fiefdoms I’m unable to do any testing on the big three channels.
Wget at this location has gone offline. I have extracted a working wget and bundled it with the other files. You can go ahead and update your script. move it to your box and run it. It will grab wget as part of it’s execution from my website and install it.
You do that from the apple menu.
Not sure what the problem is here, obviously it’s linking to files that are now missing. I’ve been leaving it to everyone else to obtain the patch stick so check the relevant forums for a solution. If you find anything and want to post it back here i’ll update the instructions for others.
what I’ve found is that the patchstick downloaded a .dmg from Apple. But.. that file is gone.
this thread here: http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/issues/detail?id=411
i found a working apple tv dmg n that thread and was able to patchstick my apple tv. Just make sure to NOT install the xbmc/boxee from that utility or you’ll get the old old alpha.
Keith – thanks so much. Your support of the Apple TV community is much appreciated!
I had success with the script a few days ago but ended up need to reinstall it after the 3.0.2 update and now I think I stepped on my Flash. The new script is thowing errors and I can’t seem to get Flash installed. Are there instructions to do this manually or do any kind of error checking so that I can get this working?
